  3. I don't know. The people aren't exactly innocent in all this. After all, they also demand for services rendered by the government. Politicians are all too willing to oblige if it means more votes. It's a a vicious circle. Austerity to me is when everyone realizes "oh shit" and the government is the only one with the power to "fix it."

People DO get hit hard but next time we should all think twice before asking the state to install an expensive and expanding welfare state to which they will run to the ground.

Think Bear Patrol on The Simpsons when Homer advocated for one and the people demanded it. They took it to Mayor Quimby and he gave in to their demands and then they flipped out when they saw their taxes go up. At which people Quimby asked if the people were getting dumber. Or something like that.

They wanted it both ways. I guess therein lies a question: Who creates the demand for the welfare state? Politicians or people? Is it the state to control the people or is it the people in order to push forward a "progressive" society? Or is both in a contract to create a vision or ideal of humanity?

Historically, if we take the modern example, von Bismarck created the first welfare measures in the West. He was, of course, a leader.

I wonder if anyone has anything to add to this.
