Blood Sucking Bankers Will Not Stop

Coordinated action from the world's Central Banks to inject liquidity into the European financial system may spark a global stock-market rally, but it won't solve the underlying issues plaguing the European economy such as a political unwillingness to carry out tough reform policies, experts say.-Experts: Central Bank Move Doesn't Solve Core Problems, May Fuel Inflation

Fight Internet Censorship (SOPA)

Congress is considering two...deeply flawed bills, the PROTECT-IP Act and the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA).

As written, they would betray more than a decade of US policy and advocacy of Internet freedom by establishing a censorship system using the same domain blacklisting technologies pioneered by China and Iran.-Protect the Net

SOPA Explained

The text of the bill is here. This bill would strengthen copyright holders' means to go after allegedly infringing sites at detrimental cost to the freedom and integrity of the Internet. As a result, we are joining forces with organizations such as the EFF, Mozilla, Wikimedia, and the FSF for American Censorship Day.

Part of this act would undermine the safe harbor provisions of the Digital Millenium Copyright Act which would make sites like reddit and YouTube liable for hosting user content that may be infringing. This act would also force search engines, DNS providers, and payment processors to cease all activities with allegedly infringing sites, in effect, walling off users from them.
This bill sets a chilling precedent that endangers everyone's right to freely express themselves and the future of the Internet. If you would like to voice your opinion to those in Washington, please consider writing your representative and the sponsors of this bill:

Newt on the Drug War

The mainstream media's new favorite GOP candidate for President...

Republican presidential nominee contender Newt Gingrich said Saturday he would favor the use of the death penalty against Mexican drug trafficking organization leaders. The comments came in an interview with Yahoo News in which the former Georgia congressman and Speaker of the House also called medical marijuana in California "a joke" and suggested he would try to make life miserable for US drug users as a means of driving down drug use rates.-Newt Gingrich on the Drug War: Execute Mexican Cartel Leaders (And More Terribly Draconian Ideas)

Wait, the US already has the world's largest prison population, much of that a direct result of the failed "war" on drugs, and Newt the evil one wants more of the same failed policies? Does he own stock in or have friends in the thriving for-profit prison industry?

According to Gingrich, a relaxed policy on marijuana sends a “confusing signal” about other drugs. Yet cigarettes and alcohol are widely used and that is not confusing in Gingrich’s mind.

Continuing the current federal policy does not allow states the right to have medical marijuana, although both the Bush and Obama administrations have looked the other way over this conflict. As the interview proceeded, Gingrich suggested that he wouldn’t look the other way. Gingrich wants to take care of medical marijuana abuse in California by banning it altogether. Other legal, addictive painkillers are not banned because of misuse. Laws are simply put into place to restrict the abuse. There is always a different standard for marijuana.

In the final analysis, what is the difference between drinking a legal six-pack of beer and smoking a joint?-Newt Gingrich on Drugs: If You Take Drugs You Don’t Have “Full Citizenship”

Gingrich: I think if you are, for example, the leader of a cartel, sure. Look at the level of violence they’ve done to society. You can either be in the Ron Paul tradition and say there’s nothing wrong with heroin and cocaine or you can be in the tradition that says, ‘These kind of addictive drugs are terrible, they deprive you of full citizenship and they lead you to a dependency which is antithetical to being an American.’ If you’re serious about the latter view, then we need to think through a strategy that makes it radically less likely that we’re going to have drugs in this country.

Places like Singapore have been the most successful at doing that. They’ve been very draconian. And they have communicated with great intention that they intend to stop drugs from coming into their country.

So there's Gingrich's "solution", the fascist laws of Singapore!

Oh, and Ron Paul never said anything close to "there's nothing wrong with heroin and cocaine" (another Newt lie from Gingrich the Prevaricator), all he has stated is that liberty demands that you sometimes let people make bad choices, and that being against criminalising non-violent activties does not mean you approve of those choices. I don't, for example, approve of divorcing your sick wife while having an affair with someone else, but I don't favor making it a crime.

Gingrich: We should have Singapore-style drug tests for Americans

Doug Stanhope on the Pink Ribbon

I'm eating a Breast Cancer Awareness-lidded Dannon Yogurt at an airport. I peel off the pink-ribboned foil top and notice that there is writing on the inside but in order to read it, I have to lick the yogurt of the inner lid.

In small print - I'm at an awful place where I sometimes have to use reading glasses - it tells me that if I go to a website and register then I can enter the given code at which point the caring people at Dannon will give one thin dime to Breast Cancer.

You see the big pink ribbon and logo on the top and assume that you - by simply purchasing and eating this product - are DOING something to help. Total up the amount of people that actually take the time to lick, read, log on, register, enter a code and hit send and I'd guess that the total contribution to The Cause is less than nothing.

Multiply this by the amount of companies turning similar duplicity, the color pink and the popularity of Tits into huge third-quarter profits and all of a sudden you don't need to Occupy Wall Street to figure out that Breast Cancer Awareness is just another giant money-rake by the corporate house.-Take the Pink Out of the Stink

Stop Censorship

The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the PROTECT IP Act (PIPA) would ruin so much of what's best about the Internet: They will give the government and corporations new powers to block Americans' access to sites that are accused of copyright infringement, force sites like YouTube to go to new lengths to police users' contributions, and put people in prison for streaming certain content online.

There's a good chance this legislation will pass – but Senator Ron Wyden is a steadfast opponent, and he says he'll try to block it by filibustering if it comes up for a vote.

At a House Judiciary Committee hearing Wednesday, Democrats and Republicans joined together to voice support for legislation that would criminalize much of the activity that occupies the Internet. The bipartisan bill known as the Stop Online Piracy Act would establish major new powers for corporations intent on corralling copyrighted materials -- powers that would lead to big legal bills for start-ups and Silicon Valley giants alike.

SOPA's Senate counterpart, the PROTECT IP Act, was already voted out of the Senate Judiciary Committee in September.

Both political parties -- flush with campaign contributions from Hollywood studios and trial lawyers -- are eager to pass the legislation-SOPA, Internet Censorship Bill, Lauded By Both Parties In Key House Hearing

Fascism Rising: Bill Would Allow Military To Detain US Citizens Indefinitely

Col. Douglas Macgregor, (Ret.), explains why provisions of the NDAA fly in the face of Constitutional principles and what's really needed to reform our military and bring it into the 21st century.

The Senate is set to vote on a bill next week that would define the whole of the United States as a “battlefield” and allow the U.S. Military to arrest American citizens in their own back yard without charge or trial.

“The Senate is going to vote on whether Congress will give this president—and every future president — the power to order the military to pick up and imprison without charge or trial civilians anywhere in the world. The power is so broad that even U.S. citizens could be swept up by the military and the military could be used far from any battlefield, even within the United States itself,” writes Chris Anders of the ACLU Washington Legislative Office.-Senate Moves To Allow Military To Intern Americans Without Trial

Controversy over whether or not Americans are exempt from a provision of the National Defense Authorization Act bill, set to be voted on this week by the Senate, which defines the the entirety of the United States as a battleground in the war on terror, has been addressed by Republican Congressman Justin Amash, who warns that the bill does apply to U.S. citizens.-Yes, Americans Will Be Targeted As Terrorists Under the NDAA

Carl Sagan vs William Lane Craig

The contrast between the metered maturity of Carl Sagan and the sneering school child of William Lane Craig is stark.

Craig, all but gleeful to dismiss those who merely ask for consistency between his treatments of unknowns.

Where did the universe come from? (begging the question to begin with), but Craig handwaves and uses his 'god' to explain this unknown.

However rejects the idea that this god needs a cause.

Sagan of course hits the nail on the head straight away. Why not just be honest and say its an unknown. Why all the posturing to replace an unknown with 'god'. What is wrong with the humility of merely saying 'we do not have a good explanation yet. It is an unknown'.

Santa Claus is Real

I had that moment, when my "best" friend from school was visiting at my house one December day between Christmas and New Years. The conversation turned to what Christmas presents we each had received, and I mentioned Santa. My friend (his name was Scott, the bastard!) laughed in my face and said "There is no Santa Claus!" I was shocked, literally. I mean, it was as if someone had said the sun wasn't going to rise tomorrow. How could this so-called friend of mine, with whom I'd spent hours at school in the same classroom, and after school at his house and he at mine, tell me such a thing? How could he be so ignorant, or cruel if he was joking? I immediately shouted for my mom. She would set the fool straight!

Mom wasn't much help, I'm afraid, and it slowly dawned on me the rest of that terrible day that I'd been deceived for years! No wonder I'd believed so strongly in the jolly fat man in the red suit. Presents found in the bushes at the side of the house Christmas morning, "Must have fallen off Santa's sleigh!"; Doorbells ringing and piles of Christmas loot left on the front porch, with no one in sight when we opened the door; the sound of bells (which seemed to come from outside) every Christmas. What elaborate lies they had spun.

That was the last Christmas that held any real magic for me...

Come back, Santa, come back!

Elephant Ears

When I was growing up, I thought that "Elephant Ear" plants were elephants. How wrong I was you say? But, could I have been right after all? Reflect upon that!

image by Tobyotter used under Creative Commons

Now that you've reflected on that, go water your elephants!

Oh, I suppose I should go into more detail. My mom has always been a fanatic about her yards (it would be nice to say "yard", but she's had too many houses for me to count), constantly fussing with and changing the landscaping. When I was barely out of diapers (well, maybe a couple years after that), in what I believe was already my third home after my birth, she decided to add some pizazz to the side of the house by the garage. So, one weekend (I'm sure it must have been a weekend) I wake up to hear my parents up early. Mom is saying something about "The elephant ears are on the back of the truck, he's ready to unload them". I guess she was talking to my dad. I only know what stuck in my young brain, and that was the word "elephant".

Perhaps, due to the literalism of a child, and being, at that tender age, unfamiliar with the adult use of familiar terms to describe something in another category altogether, I only heard "elephant", the "ears" part hardly registering at all. Then mom mentioned they were little, so baby elephants immediately popped into my head. Boy, was I excited! Baby elephants were on the back of some truck, right out in our front yard! I hurriedly got dressed, ran to the front door, and stepped outside into the sunlight. I looked all around, but no elephants, just some stupid plants in pots being carried by the guy from the truck and Dad, while Mom supervised the scene.

It was one of my bigger disappointments up to that point in my life.

The Milkmaid Wurzled My Mangels

She did, honestly. Might have been drunk when it happened, and by god, I didn't even know we had a cow, but I'll swear it happened!

Anyway, the question is, are the "Fine Arts" in trouble with the stupidest generation (the one currently "graduating" with worthless college "degrees")?

A study just published in the journal Poetics suggests art forms such as literature and classical music “are becoming increasingly more irrelevant for most students’ cultural lives.” This points to “an increasingly precarious position for traditional highbrow culture,” according to a trio of researchers led by the University of Bergen’s Jostein Gripsrud.

I’m afraid that this is nonsense, nonsense that has been repeated since Aristotle’s grandfather first pointed out that society was going to the dogs.

Ice Cream Song: "Do you love ice cream?"

I love ice cream too much, which is why I stopped buying it...

While we're on the subject, what is your favorite flavor of ice cream? Something exotic or something quite ordinary? My sister always insisted on plain vanilla, while my favorite as a child was good old Rocky Road! My mom loves butter pecan, while my dad, well, almost any flavor will do.

Dad used to tell us about the occasional ice cream treat when he was a kid. He had four brothers and sisters, and when they all had been served their bowls of ice cream, his siblings would gobble theirs down quickly (probably because they saw such a dessert so rarely, the family being so poor) while he would take his time, consuming only tiny bites, until the right moment came, with the forlorn faces of the others looking up from their empty bowls, and he would make sure to show them he still had almost all of his ice cream, and then taunt them with the fact. He may have kept it up for hours but for the inconvenient truth that ice cream eventually melts.

Thanksgiving Hoax

Each year at this time school children all over America are taught the official Thanksgiving story, and newspapers, radio, TV, and magazines devote vast amounts of time and space to it. It is all very colorful and fascinating.

It is also very deceiving. This official story is nothing like what really happened. It is a fairy tale, a whitewashed and sanitized collection of half-truths which divert attention away from Thanksgiving's real meaning.

The official story has the pilgrims boarding the Mayflower, coming to America and establishing the Plymouth colony in the winter of 1620-21. This first winter is hard, and half the colonists die. But the survivors are hard working and tenacious, and they learn new farming techniques from the Indians. The harvest of 1621 is bountiful. The Pilgrims hold a celebration, and give thanks to God. They are grateful for the wonderful new abundant land He has given them.

The official story then has the Pilgrims living more or less happily ever after, each year repeating the first Thanksgiving. Other early colonies also have hard times at first, but they soon prosper and adopt the annual tradition of giving thanks for this prosperous new land called America.

The problem with this official story is that the harvest of 1621 was not bountiful, nor were the colonists hardworking or tenacious. 1621 was a famine year and many of the colonists were lazy thieves.

In his History of Plymouth Plantation, the governor of the colony, William Bradford, reported that the colonists went hungry for years, because they refused to work in the fields. They preferred instead to steal food. He says the colony was riddled with "corruption," and with "confusion and discontent." The crops were small because "much was stolen both by night and day, before it became scarce eatable."

In the harvest feasts of 1621 and 1622, "all had their hungry bellies filled," but only briefly. The prevailing condition during those years was not the abundance the official story claims, it was famine and death. The first "Thanksgiving" was not so much a celebration as it was the last meal of condemned men.

But in subsequent years something changes. The harvest of 1623 was different. Suddenly, "instead of famine now God gave them plenty," Bradford wrote, "and the face of things was changed, to the rejoicing of the hearts of many, for which they blessed God." Thereafter, he wrote, "any general want or famine hath not been amongst them since to this day." In fact, in 1624, so much food was produced that the colonists were able to begin exporting corn.

What happened?

After the poor harvest of 1622, writes Bradford, "they began to think how they might raise as much corn as they could, and obtain a better crop." They began to question their form of economic organization.

This had required that "all profits & benefits that are got by trade, working, fishing, or any other means" were to be placed in the common stock of the colony, and that, "all such persons as are of this colony, are to have their meat, drink, apparel, and all provisions out of the common stock." A person was to put into the common stock all he could, and take out only what he needed.

This "from each according to his ability, to each according to his need" was an early form of socialism, and it is why the Pilgrims were starving. Bradford writes that "young men that are most able and fit for labor and service" complained about being forced to "spend their time and strength to work for other men's wives and children." Also, "the strong, or man of parts, had no more in division of victuals and clothes, than he that was weak." So the young and strong refused to work and the total amount of food produced was never adequate.

To rectify this situation, in 1623 Bradford abolished socialism. He gave each household a parcel of land and told them they could keep what they produced, or trade it away as they saw fit. In other words, he replaced socialism with a free market, and that was the end of famines.

Many early groups of colonists set up socialist states, all with the same terrible results. At Jamestown, established in 1607, out of every shipload of settlers that arrived, less than half would survive their first twelve months in America. Most of the work was being done by only one-fifth of the men, the other four-fifths choosing to be parasites. In the winter of 1609-10, called "The Starving Time," the population fell from five-hundred to sixty.

Then the Jamestown colony was converted to a free market, and the results were every bit as dramatic as those at Plymouth. In 1614, Colony Secretary Ralph Hamor wrote that after the switch there was "plenty of food, which every man by his own industry may easily and doth procure." He said that when the socialist system had prevailed, "we reaped not so much corn from the labors of thirty men as three men have done for themselves now."

Before these free markets were established, the colonists had nothing for which to be thankful. They were in the same situation as Ethiopians are today, and for the same reasons. But after free markets were established, the resulting abundance was so dramatic that the annual Thanksgiving celebrations became common throughout the colonies, and in 1863, Thanksgiving became a national holiday.

Thus the real reason for Thanksgiving, deleted from the official story, is: Socialism does not work; the one and only source of abundance is free markets, and we thank God we live in a country where we can have them.

Neocon Krauthammer: Ron Paul is living in the 1920's

The disgusting and evil Charles Krauthammer doesn't like Ron Paul. The lying cripple also distorts facts and history to support his neocon agenda.

Krauthammer used his considerable influence in 2002 and 2003 to help sell much of the American public on the war for which the Bush administration was clearly itching. It began with the president's talk about "regime change" in Iraq, a policy adopted in the late 1990's by the Clinton administration and the Republican Congress. When that didn't win the country over, Iraq's "weapons of mass destruction" became the new mantra. The neocon high church choir took up the theme and was soon singing, chanting and beating the drums for another war with Iraq. And there was Krauthammer in the midst of them.

In words reminiscent of the "mushroom-shaped cloud" warning of Condoleezza Rice, then the president's adviser on national security, Krauthammer warned in 2002 that Iraqi ruler Saddam Hussein was in hot pursuit of a nuclear bomb to go with the chemical and biological weapons that the Bush administration and its echo chamber in the neocon press told us with certainty he possessed.

"…[I]f he comes into possession of nuclear weapons in addition to the weapons of mass destruction he already has, he is likely to use them or share them with terrorists," Krauthammer wrote. "The threat of mass death on a scale never before seen residing in the hands of an unstable madman is intolerable — and must be preempted."-Charles the Hammer

Back then, we returned milk bottles, soda bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. So they really were recycled.

But we didn't have the green thing back in our day.

We walked up stairs, because we didn't have an escalator in every store and office building. We walked to the grocery store and didn't climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time we had to go two blocks.

But she was right. We didn't have the green thing in our day.

Back then, we washed the baby's diapers because we didn't have the throw-away kind. We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy gobbling machine burning up 220 volts -- wind and solar power really did dry the clothes. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing.

But that old lady is right; we didn't have the green thing back in our day.

Back then, we had one TV, or radio, in the house -- not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief (remember them?), not a screen the size of the state of Montana.

In the kitchen, we blended and stirred by hand because we didn't have electric machines to do everything for us.

When we packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, we used a wadded up old newspaper to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap.

Back then, we didn't fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. We used a push mower that ran on human power. We exercised by working so we didn't need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity.

But she's right; we didn't have the green thing back then.

We drank from a fountain when we were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time we had a drink of water.

We refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and we replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull.

But we didn't have the green thing back then.

Back then, people took the streetcar or a bus and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour taxi service.

We had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And we didn't need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest pizza joint.

But isn't it sad the current generation laments how wasteful we old folks were just because we didn't have the green thing back then?

Why did Facebook freeze content that was tagged for me to post and tagged for me to share? Facebook said I had violated its policies. Since I have no idea what policy I violated (and really couldn't care less) I took a look back at my most controversial posts from a week ago.

Possibly, Facebook didn't appreciate the ACLU article, "The Social Network is Stalking You."

...

But really, there was so much police abuse of peaceful protesters across the nation about one week ago, that any of the following posts could have been sufficient to trigger Big Brother slamming my Facebook content into ice-chest mode.-Facebook Freezes my Content: Lets Have a Look

Thanksgiving in Afghanistan

Propaganda videos from the lamestream statist media:

The news is filled with stories of the troops in Afghanistan away from their families for Thanksgiving. Obama even called some military personnel from the different branches to thank them for their service and wish them a happy Thanksgiving. But on this day we should never forget that the US military has no business in Afghanistan or any other foreign country. There is no reason for anyone in the military to be away from his family on Thanksgiving. It is the pilots, nurses, taxi drivers, and convenience store clerks in the US that we should thank for their service on this day.-Laurence Vance: Thanksgiving and the Troops

I was up at a supermarket today (getting my turkey hot dogs for my feast) and the store was staying open until 9PM on Thanksgiving! As I walked by one of the market's employees in the back of the store, he was saying to another customer that he had 7 hours to go on his work shift. Yes, he is certainly much more a hero on a holiday than the troops of an evil empire being served Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings.

Classic SE: Don't Look Away

What a perfect Classic SE for Thanksgiving, which became a national holiday, in the sense of being celebrated on the same day in all the states, in 1863 by proclamation of the criminal tyrant Abraham Lincoln.

When the struggle for Southern independence was crushed by the tyrant Lincoln and his War of Northern Aggression, it was a true tragedy. But if the South ever rises again (and I've a feeling it will) it may be the answer to ending Federal control of all of our lives. There is now no longer just "fringe" talk of secession, but serious consideration of it among even elected officials, and if the Old Confederacy were to become a New Confederacy (or even a bunch of independent nations, such as a new Republic of Texas) I would move there without hesitation, just to get the yoke of Federal Government oppression off my neck. Lincoln didn't free the slaves, he just created a different kind of slave and a new and horrifying form of slavery, which we continue to suffer from to this day.

TSA and FBI Endanger Airline Passengers and Crews!

The FAA, working with the criminal organizations the TSA and FBI, has ordered emergency oxygen removed from mile high toilets because one of their imaginary terrorists might use the life-saving oxygen systems to "create a flight hazard" even though "passengers, flight attendants and pilots using a lavatory could be seriously harmed or killed if there is an aircraft decompression and emergency oxygen is needed immediately at a high altitude."

The decision, made in conjunction with the Transportation Security Administration and the FBI, "was purely a precautionary measure," and "there is no credible or specific threat at this time," the FAA says...-FAA removes emergency oxygen from airline lavatories

Bachmann: Raise taxes on the poor! F**k yeah!

Republicans are now aiming to hike taxes on the poor and middle class. Bachmann says everybody should "pay something" to the murderous state, and by "everybody" she means everyone except the rich (who will be on the "receiving" end of the robbery). The other big contenders seem to agree.

While we've come to expect this from Republicans, I'm surprised how few libertarians have jumped on this outrage. This is the most horrific and anti-human tax raise I've ever heard of, and it's from the "anti-tax" party.

Capitalism =/= the "market"

Part of being a committed political blogger is evaluating and re-evaluating your views over time. While I remain committed to the demise of the state, along with market economics, I've come to accept most of the leftist critique of modern capitalism.

As the economy currently stands, large corporations and banks maximize returns for a dwindling number of wealthy absentee owners--who contribute no real labor (entrepreneurial or otherwise) to their enterprises. For obvious reasons, this tends to slant the entire economy in their favor, at the expense of everybody else. One credible study concluded that "reductions in wages and benefits explain the majority of the net improvement in [recent profit] margins."

It's not just the inevitable (excessive) inequality of this arrangement that's problematic. It's the fact that the absentee owners couldn't care less about workplace safety, workplace liberty, leisure time, or local communities. A democratically-run firm would have a far stronger incentive to care about all four, instead of being concerned only with profits for outside investors.

That's not to say that there wouldn't be investors under my version of market anarchism. Investment is a form of mental labor that deserves to be compensated in the form of interest. But most capitalist "investment" consists of merely buying stock from other absentee owners, rather than pumping fresh capital into productive enterprises.

There would still be managers and entrepreneurs, as well. The difference is that everyone in the firm would have democratic control over people put in managerial positions (assuming they don't choose to manage in a more cooperative fashion). The division of labor remains intact, but the gratuitous authoritarianism of modern corporate America is dealt a big blow.

Kevin Carson et all were right all along. Markets =/= 'capitalism'. We can and should embrace the first concept without the second.

Science in the Koran?

Following the release of a video clip of an interview he participated in in the 1980's, William Hay has often been cited as a scientist who has allegedly attested to the miraculous nature of the information within the Quran.

This video is an uncut interview with Prof Hay nearly 30 years later asking him to explain this experience in detail, and his thoughts on the matter.

A decision to be proud of

This afternoon, I did what I should have done a long time ago and joined the ACLU. After watching the Republican candidates brag about how they will invade Iran and murder every living thing there, I've decided that I will do whatever it takes to fight these sick bastards (including the Obombya regime) and everything they stand for. I am proud to ally myself with such a fine organization, and happy that my donation will also go toward fighting the war on drugs, creationism in schools, the prison system, and all the other idiocy that conservatives support.

If O'Reilly hates them, they deserve support. Period.

Super-Committee missed the Telephone Booth

If you ever looked up incompetent in the dictionary, it might show a picture of Congress.  If there are too many for the group photo, then it might as well be the 12 members of the “Super” Committee, who were appointed to fix the deficit crisis.  Yet they were unable to find anything that they could cut because apparently there is nothing to cut in government.

The vast majority of Congress is made up of buffoons who were failures in life.  They couldn’t even do a good job as a lawyer, which is probably the easiest white-collar job in the world so long as you can read and write coherently, and yet they were able to sell enough snake oil to enough gullible voters.

I know there are complex, partisan issues at play here.  On the side, you have Republicans who will not cut foreign policy spending, which totals about 1 trillion.  Likewise, you have Democrats who will not cut welfare spending, which totals around 1 trillion as well.

Now I know math is a difficult subject for the average blog reader, given the comments I have seen in the past, but please stick with me.  Our government takes in about 2.1 trillion in tax revenues this year.  They spend well over 3 trillion, where they borrow the difference to make up for the lack of revenue.  What this means, is that over 1/3 of the United States Federal government’s budget is not paid for and added to the total Federal government debt, which is now approaching 15 trillion.

This means that in order to balance the budget and get a hold of the deficit in the immediate short term, they have to make cuts.   The sad fact is, even if everything but foreign policy spending and moocher benefits were cut completely out of the budget, there would still be a deficit, piling on to a debt that cannot be repaid.

Meanwhile, both parties will state that certain things are off the table in terms of spending.  Then they to the dumb masses about how they have capped or cut spending when they do nothing of the sort.

I knew full well that the Super-Committee would fail because I know these people and their motivations.  If you are a Congressperson, your first instinct is to kick the can down the road on the really important stuff and make as much money as you can in the short while you have the power to do so.

Fixing the Federal budget and getting it balanced is not a difficult task.  There have been countless proposals all over the Internet, many of them detailed enough to resolve the issue.  But instead of trying something, anything, Congress just keeps the status quo and goes on like nothing will ever change.

But big changes are coming and I do not mean the elections.  The whole financial system that they bank on (literally) is going to collapse.  Already bankster agents are being openly appointed to positions of power in Europe, with the hopes of preventing it, but people like Mario Monti should be wary of what happened to Benito Mussolini.  The fact is, what they are doing is not sustainable any longer.

However, I do have a solution for Congress: appoint me head of all legislative actions and I will come up with a budget plan in two short weeks, provided I am compensated for my efforts.  I will ensure that the budget is balanced and that the interests of the American people are met while at the same time reversing the course of the growing debt.

I also would like to add that while I am above average, I am also highly motivated in that I do not wish to live that cesspool known as Washington, D.C. longer than I have too.  I have experience in managing budgets for organizations in the past, albeit on a voluntary basis.

As an added bonus, I’ll add that my budget proposal will be so good, Congress and the President won’t have to vote it.  They can basically give me a blank check to rework it however I want to.   As an added bonus, you can make me the scapegoat, provided I get my own private island in the Caribbean to live on for the rest of my life, should that be necessary.

If you don’t like my offer, that’s OK.  But you have admit it is better than what you have been doing all this time.

The Impossible Game

The impossible game is the hunt for gods — each path in the game represents a particular proposed god/groups of gods. The paths are not 'life paths' or 'world views'. The goal of the game has nothing to do with being a good person, or finding personal fulfillment, or any number of other relativistic enterprises. The goal is very specific: to find a god/gods that exists.

You will hear claim after claim on whatever path you choose. You can play for years — but will you actually find any gods? Up to you whether you wish to play the impossible game.

Rain Nap

It rains as I write this, a good strong rain, not harsh, but certainly not weak and sickly. It's been coming down for a few hours now, and that's the way I like it, but now, as the evening drags on, I become tired. Is it time to go to bed? Not if this blog has anything to say about it (and it usually does). So much left undone today, posts unwritten, Bret's crazy non-arguments unexamined. I need a short rain nap, to rest and listen, and hopefully be restored so as to come back here shortly and finish the day's work at SE.

Either that or I'll just see you tomorrow, but I really do plan to be back before the night is over.

Right now I'm reading Huckleberry Finn again. I reread it periodically. I still think the King and the Duke take up too much of the book, and that the last section (which I'm reading now, where Tom and Huck plot to "free" Jim) stinks quite a bit (though not entirely). But then, it is Mark Twain and probably the greatest of American novels, so what's to complain about? If I can keep my eyes open, I'll read a little more while the rain still falls.

How To Free Your Work (instructions)

Occupy Wall Street Simplified

The Biggest "Theft" by the 1 Percent

"Property is theft," French anarchist Pierre-Joseph Proudhon famously declared in 1840 - a judgment clearly shared by many of those involved in the occupations in the name of the 99 percent around the country, and especially when applied to Wall Street bankers and traders. Elizabeth Warren also angrily points out that there "is nobody in this country who got rich on his own. Nobody." Meaning: if the rich don't pay their fair share of the taxes which educate their workers and provide roads, security and many other things, they are essentially stealing from everyone else.

But this is the least of it: Proudhon may have exaggerated when, for instance, we think of a small farmer working his own land with his own hands. But we now know that he was far closer to the truth than even he might have imagined when it comes to how the top 1 percent really got so rich, and why the 99 percent lost out. The biggest "theft" by the 1 percent has been of the primary source of wealth - knowledge - for its own benefit.

Knowledge? Yes, of course, and increasingly so. The fact is, most of what we call wealth is now known to be overwhelmingly the product of technical, scientific and other knowledge - and most of this innovation derives from socially inherited knowledge, at that. Which means that, except for trivial amounts, it was simply not created by the 1 percent who enjoy the lion's share of its benefits. Most of it was created, historically, by society - which is to say, minimally, the other 99 percent.

Take a simple example: In our own time, over many decades, the development of the steel plow and the tractor increased one man's capacity to farm, from a small plot (with a mule and wooden plow) to many hundred acres. What changed over the years to make this possible was a great deal of engineering, steelmaking, chemistry and other knowledge developed by society as a whole.

Another obvious example: Many of the advances that have propelled our high-tech economy in recent decades grew directly out of research programs financed and, often, collaboratively developed, by the federal government and paid for by the taxpayer. The Internet, to take the most well-known example, began as a government defense project, the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET), in the 1960s. Today's vast software industry rests on a foundation of computer language and operating hardware developed, in large part, with public support. The Bill Gateses of the world might still be working with vacuum tubes and punch cards were it not for critical research and technology programs created or financed by the federal government after World War II.

The iPhone is another example: Its microchips, cellular communication abilities and global positioning system (GPS) all flowed from developments traceable to significant direct and indirect public support from the military and space programs. The "revolutionary" multi-touch screen was developed by University of Delaware researchers financially supported by the National Science Foundation and the CIA. It is not only electronics: of the 15 modern US-developed "blockbuster" drugs with over $1 billion in sales, 13 received significant public research and development support.

But taxpayer-financed government programs (including, of course, all of public education!) are only the tip of the iceberg. And here we are not talking rhetoric, we are talking the stuff of Nobel prizes. Over the last several decades, economic research has begun to pinpoint much more precisely how much of what we call "wealth" society in general derives from long, steady, century-by-century advances in knowledge - and how much any one individual at any point in time can be said to have earned and "deserved."

Recent estimates indicate, for instance, that national output per capita has increased more than twentyfold over the 200-plus years since 1800. Output per hour worked has increased an estimated fifteenfold since 1870 alone. Yet the modern person is likely to work each hour with no greater commitment, risk or intelligence than his counterpart from the past. The primary reason for such huge gains is that, on the whole, scientific, technical and cultural knowledge has grown at a scale and pace that far outstrips any other factor in the nation's economic achievement.

A half-century ago, in 1957, economist Robert Solow showed that nearly 90 percent of productivity growth in the first half of the 20th century alone, from 1909 to 1949, could only be attributed to technical change in the broadest sense. The supply of labor and capital - what workers and employers contribute - appeared almost incidental to this massive technological "residual." (Solow received the Nobel Prize for this and related work in 1987.) Another leading economist, William Baumol, calculated that "nearly 90 percent ... of current GDP [gross domestic product] was contributed by innovation carried out since 1870."

The truly central and demanding question is obviously this: If most of what we have today is attributable to knowledge advances that we all inherit in common, why, specifically, should this gift of our collective history not more generously benefit all members of society? The top 1 percent of US households now receives far more income than the bottom 150 million Americans combined. The richest 1 percent of households owns nearly half of all investment assets (stocks and mutual funds, financial securities, business equity, trusts, nonhome real estate). A mere 400 individuals at the top have a combined net worth greater than the bottom 60 percent of the nation taken together. If America's vast wealth is mainly a gift of our common past, how, specifically, can such disparities be justified?

Early in the American republic, Thomas Paine urged that everything "beyond what a man's own hands produce" was a gift that came to him simply by living in society, and, hence, "he owes on every principle of justice, of gratitude, and of civilization, a part of that accumulation back again to society from whence the whole came." Another American reformer, Henry George, challenged what he called "the unearned increment" that is created when population growth and other societal factors increase land values.

To be sure, someone who genuinely makes a real contribution deserves to be rewarded. But Proudhon is right on target for many, many others: when what is created by all of society for many centuries gets turned into wealth, and, somehow, directly or indirectly, shunted away from the 99 percent by the 1 percent, much of that process, in fact, is reasonably described as "theft." The demand of the occupations that this theft stop, that it be reversed, is also right on target - both in what we know about how wealth is created, and, above all, in what we know about how a just society ought to organize its affairs.

The Democrats do it because they care

After the police state and national security cult of the Bush years, it’s nice to have our national security statism dished out by such a bunch of sensitive souls for a change. The Reaganites and neocons sent out goons in uniform to bash people’s heads in, both domestically and abroad because, you know, they were all mean and stuff. The Democrats do it because they care.

Just look at the Obama administration’s decision to name a Navy cargo ship after slain civil rights activist Medgar Evers. Can you imagine the Bush administration doing something like that? They’d probably have named it after some warlike figure from naval history. Not Obama. If our progressive Commander-in-Chief rains death from the skies on Iran (only because he had to do it to “stop their aggression,” dontcha know), those below can take comfort in knowing not only that they’re being burned alive on orders from a progressive rather than from a nasty old right-winger — but that the ammo comes courtesy of Medgar Evars!

Now that’s change I can believe in! I can’t wait for the Martin Luther King, Jr. daisy cutter. Or maybe they can name every HK drone that kills an American citizen without trial after Thoreau, Howard Zinn, Gandhi, or Utah Phillips.

And the folks who were gassed, pepper-sprayed and clubbed out of their Occupy camps all over the country in the last few days should feel better that not only were at least two of the attacks (in Oakland and Portland) ordered by mayors of impeccable progressive credentials — they even received helpful advice from progressive little piggies at the Homeland Security Department and FBI of Mr. “¡Sí Se Puede!” himself.

That’s right! Mayor Quan said that, just before she sent in her enlightened and caring stormtroopers to clear out Occupy Oakland, she was in on a conference call of eighteen cities discussing how to handle the Occupy situation. Better yet, according to Rick Ellis of Minneapolis Examiner, based on a “background conversation” with an anonymous official from Obama’s Justice Department:

“… local police agencies were advised to seek a legal reason to evict residents of tent cities, focusing on zoning laws and existing curfew rules. Agencies were also advised to demonstrate a massive show of police force, including large numbers in riot gear. In particular, the FBI reportedly advised on press relations, with one presentation suggesting that any moves to evict protesters be coordinated for a time when the press was the least likely to be present.”

Afterward, Mayor Quan denied that the cities “coordinated” their raids; she merely “talked with other mayors to share experiences.” See, that’s the kind of thing you can only get from a Democrat. She didn’t talk with them about how to bust people’s heads in, like a grouchy old Republican mayor. She “shared experiences,” like a New Agey Californian!

Of course, those of us in the South are quite familiar with informal meetings of government officials to “share experiences.” Like when several county commissioners get together for a barbecue at the county executive’s house, for instance. And while they’re sitting around sharing experiences and all, the subject just happens to come up of — say — what a great industrial park Uncle Billy Bob’s pasture would make. Perfectly legit — isn’t that what Oprah calls the Law of Attraction?

So folks all over the world, from Oakland demonstrators to wedding parties in Afghanistan, are finding out what Hope and Change are all about. Those progressive bullets hurt so much less, don’t they?

Democrat Mayors Crackdown on Occupy Movement

On a more local level it’s imperative to ask where the majority of the onslaught against Occupy mobilizations have originated. A few weeks ago I documented...the electoral leadership of nine of the most damning cities—I included billionaire New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg because up until the post-9/11 elections he was a lifelong Democrat, and he frequently diffuses the rhetoric of the Democratic party in a smoke-and-mirrors attempt to feign support for civil liberties and civil rights—and all nine were Democratic mayors. This includes the first female Asian mayor of Oakland and the black mayor of Atlanta...
