Question of the Day: Who Knows Best, You or The Government?

Our country was founded by individuals… for individuals. For the last approximately 100 years, things have slowly changed. We now have a powerful Federal Government that can drastically change our lives with one stroke of the pen. As “We the Little People” have been fighting between Right and Left, Republican and Democrat, rich and poor… the politicians have been slowly taking away our liberties. Most of them believe that they know what is best for us and how we should live our lives.

Do you believe that Man can govern himself? If not, how do you trust another man to make decisions for you that would be in your best interest?-Who Do I Trust… and Why Should I Trust Their Solutions?

We can expand this greatly, and nearly forever:

Who knows best what you should put into your own body, or who has the right to decide that, you or the government?

Who knows better how you should spend YOUR money, you, or the bureaucRATS in Washington?

Who knows best what type of light bulb you should use in your home (based on your decision of cost, benefit in energy savings, nature of the light you receive from a particular type of bulb, and what you're using it for and where you are using it), you or a politician?

  1. It depends on who "you" is, doesn't it?

  2. Bret, "you" is you. The question is addressed to each individual.

Now that we've cleared that up, maybe you can actually answer the question.

  3. Then it depends on what we're talking about. I don't have the equipment to test the chemical content of everything I buy, so there's certainly a lot of things I can't know that someone with access to a lab would be able to ascertain. And while I studied plenty of science, there's still plenty I don't know (I'm certainly no nutrionist or automobile safety expert).

Maybe it's shocking to people, but I know I don't know everything. And neither does any other individual, which is why groups exist in the first place. If we were all autonomous geniuses, I think you might have a point.

  5. It is pointless to attempt a discusion with you, Bret, because all you do is dance around a question.

Who said you have to know everything to make your own decisions? And if you don't feel competent on something, you can seek the advice and knowledge of someone who does (and you still have the right to make stupid decisions as well, like not wearing a seat belt, drinking too much, replying to comments by Bret Alan, etc.). Obviously we rely on others more expert than us in certain specialites. When I'm really sick, I don't diagnose and treat myself, I go to a doctor. But not because the goverment demands that I go. And then it's still my own choice to accept treatment, seek a different doctor, go to a witch doctor, whatever.

Also, you're conflating society and the state again.

If we were all autonomous geniuses, I think you might have a point

So, the U.S. Congress is collectivly at genius level to make the decision as to what light bulb I can buy? WTF??? The market, producers, individuals, prviate consumer organizations can't do that?

  6. Who said you have to know everything to make your own decisions?

Oh I know, you want companies to be able to poison us knowingly without any one knowing or stopping them. We don't have to make informed decisions... some of us just prefer it.

You are pointless to discuss anything with when it comes to your inability to understand that there are things the government does effectively. I can point to errors all day long, and I can criticise the government for it's mistakes and blatant abuses, but I can't kid myself into thinking "We would be better off without government."

The market, producers, individuals, prviate consumer organizations can't do that?

They can't and they haven't, and they effectively prevent government from doing it (especially in these days of deregulatory propaganda being spread not only by the companies who would benefit, but from short-sighted ideologues).

It's hard to talk to someone who obsesses about light bulb selection as being tyranny.

  7. It's not about light blubs, Bret, but I wouldn't expect you to understand that.

  8. Wah wah wah, I'm Nikk and I make broadly sweeping claims with no basis in reality and then get frustrated when someone tries to call me on my bullshit.

Do you want a straw, Nikk?

  9. Bret projecting again, trolling again, what else is new?

Let's see, "sweeping claims with no basis in reality"? Assertions, accusations, insults all without a shred of evidence to back them up come forth from your keyboard almost every time you leave a comment.

So deluded and infantile that you don't see the major fail in your own insane rants (not to mention being totally oblivious of how to make a coherent argument).

you want companies to be able to poison us knowingly without any one knowing or stopping them

In other words, you KNOW that I want people poisoned, not that what I advocate could lead to people being poisoned.

    Bret, please, get some help.

  10. Also, what sweeping claim does this post make? I asked a simple question and gave some examples.

Of course, we know your answer on some things, such as spending the money we earn: The state knows best how to spend it, because the state is all-knowing so there's danger in giving it massive power over our lives. Just trust Bret (another atheist with a new God to replace the old) and his God the Almighty State and everything will be okay, because those people in government don't have the same human foibles, weaknesses, and defects in character as the rest of us.

  11. Wah wah wah, I’m bret and I make broadly sweeping claims call everyone not filled with the same hate for things I was brainwashed to hate with no basis in reality and then get frustrated and pissy when someone tries to call me on my bullshit.

Fixed it, we couldn’t expect the resident clown and fuckwit to actually get that correct - why is he posting again? How many times has he quit and told everyone "fuck off none of you are worth my wonderful words” - five now? Narcissistic parasitic fuckwit
