Of course the "conservatives" and the neocon loons want to link Islam as a religion to 9/11 in particular and "terrorism" in general so they can further their political agenda of never-ending war.
I think it's more of an election year tactic. Right-wingers only win when people are pissed off at Democrats or scared of terrorists. I think they're trying to recapture that Bush-era mentality that Republicans are the Christian force for good against the evil Democrats and their tolerance of Muslim violence.
I also think it's just a way to distract people from what is actually going on in politics, namely that Republicans have stood in the way of every idea proposed by Democrats, including the bill to provide benefits to those injured during the 9/11 rescue efforts.
If you're afraid our country is being taken over by brown people from Mexico and the Middle East, Republicans are looking pretty good right about now.
