Christian Girl Faces Death Penalty For 'Blasphemy' In Pakistan

"Last weekend's arrest and imprisonment of Rimsha Masih, an 11-year old Christian girl, by Pakistani authorities in the nation's capital, Islamabad, on charges of blasphemy, is deeply alarming. The girl, whose mental stability is doubtful, will certainly face death sentence according to the Pakistani law if she is found guilty of disrespecting or burning Islamic text. While the poor terrified girl awaits appearance before a court by the end of this month, President Asif Ali Zardari has ordered an immediate inquiry into this perturbing episode. The president's intervention is not likely to serve as a breakthrough nor is it going to lead to the swift release of the girl..."

According to the Associated Press, a group of 500 to 600 people had surrounded her house in Islamabad seeking action against the alleged blasphemer. "They were very emotional, angry," AP quoted a local police officer saying, "and they might have harmed her if we had not quickly reacted." It is unfortunate that the Pakistani law and officials have also turned against Ms. Masih by imprisoning her instead of protecting her from extremists. The little girl, who barely understands the dirty politics of religion and communalism, must be undergoing immeasurable distress and trauma. Media reports say hundreds of Christian families who lived in Ms. Masih's town have also fled their homes fearing assaults by Muslim mobs. They have not agreed to return since they left some days ago as they still feel insecure. The offices of French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo have been destroyed by a petrol bomb, a day after it named the Prophet Mohammed as its “editor-in-chief” for this week’s issue.

My three favorite logical fallacies are:

argumentum ad hominem - because 90% or more people have seen it but do not understand the mechanics correctly. It is only an ad hominem when you call someone a jackass and then equate that the point made is invalid because that person is a jackass. Example: Sir Isaac Newton was a complete lunatic and a horrid jackass, but that does not invalidate his studies of mathematics.

No true Scotsman - because religionists use this as a blanket for their horrid texts and others behavior when they cannot justify the facts or gather the reality of statistics, it is excuse making at it's best and most irrational.

Moving The Goalposts - because we all know that is the only way a religionists can actually win a logical, factual, argument based on evidence - to run away.

“As soon as he can talk, we’ll get one of them TV evangelists to burn it out of him. The $500 charge seems quite cheap for such a valuable service, praise the Lord!”

"Conservative" Bloggers on the "Ground Zero Mosque"

From what looks like a conservative Republican blog, a "proposal" to shove pork and boobs in the faces of Muslims:

I work in the Ground Zero area and I watched the twin towers of the World Trade Center fall from my office window.

It was a very scary thing to witness.

But, now is a time for healing!

Actually, I'm all for it. Muslims are a persecuted minority in the United States, so they too need a place to relax and unwind, don't they?



Here is a reasoned response to all this "conservative" phony outrage from the libertarian perspective:

Nothing illustrates the utter craziness of our society in the post-9/11 era than the controversy over the "Ground Zero mosque." To begin with, the proposed Islamic center – not a mosque, but the Muslim equivalent of the YMCA – a nonprofit foundation wants to build in New York City isn’t at "ground zero," it is four blocks from the site of the World Trade Center. But that doesn’t deter demagogues like Newt Gingrich and various other unsavory opportunists from making it into a political issue.

Never mind the fact that there is already a mosque four blocks away from the site of the World Trade Center (see here), which has been there for many years. If we follow the "logic" of Newt and his fellow crusaders, then this should be torn down – along with all the other hundreds of mosques in New York City. And don’t forget Washington, D.C., the site of the attack on the Pentagon: surely symbols of the "enemy" religion must be banned there, too.
