Salute
If you love freedom of information like I do, get ready for Christmas.
Last July, WikiLeaks made headlines - and invoked the ire of government obstructionists - when they released some 70,000 documents that exposed American abuse in the Afghan War.
This brave act resulted in the imprisonment of Bradley Manning, arguably the greatest hero America has seen in a while. He exposed the world to the callous and brutal actions of the US military in Afghanistan. As of today, October 18th, he has been imprisoned for 145 days.
So imagine my elation when I found out that 7 times as many documents are set to be released this month. WikiLeaks has been teasing that over 500,000 documents pertaining to Iraq will be released in October.
Why is it taking so long? Every document is being pored over by readers who are removing any sensitive information. They aren’t redacting offensive or embarrassing information, they are ensuring that locals who aided the US and any hint of future troop movements or tactics are blacked out, so that soldiers and Iraqis are not endangered.
Don’t buy into the bullshit that this information “empowers our enemies,” or that it is unpatriotic. Opposition will say, “This information puts soldiers and allies at risk,” but I would say it was their own actions which have endangered them. The true fallout of this will be that this information is ripe for use by our enemies in recruitment, and those to blame aren’t the ones who are revealing the truth.

Freedom: the absence of monopoly
Consider the following definition of freedom: the absence of monopoly.
The absence of monopoly means that you can exercise exit, even if you cannot exercise voice. The presence of monopoly means that, at most, you can exercise voice.
Neither my local supermarket nor any of its suppliers has a way for me to exercise voice. They don't hold elections. They don't have town-hall meetings where they explain their plans for what will be in the store. By democratic standards, I am powerless in the supermarket.
And yet, I feel much freer in the supermarket than I do with respect to my county, state, or federal government. For each item in the supermarket, I can choose whether to put it into my cart and pay for it or leave it on the shelf. I can walk out of the supermarket at any time and go to a competing grocery.
The exercise of voice, including the right to vote, is not the ultimate expression of freedom. Rather, it is the last refuge of those who suffer under a monopoly.

Against Gun Control
Let me begin by stating that this analysis of gun control is biased in favor of minimizing crime and deaths as much as possible, and in favor of protecting individual rights. I am not a gun nut, nor do I support the Second Amendment. Next, I want to say that I originally supported gun control. I thought it was obvious that guns caused crime. Tellingly, I was uninformed and drew my conclusions from the media-definitely not good critical thinking. However, as I researched economics and political philosophy, I changed my position. I discovered that gun control, like all government action, must violate individual rights. I discovered that gun control, like any government prohibition, cannot work, and that gun ownership actually deters crime. Finally, I realized that gun control vs. legalization is a false dichotomy; the true dichotomy is between government vs. private weapon control. In a free society, weapons can be controlled through voluntary, peaceful means.
