Quote of the Moment: Collapse of the Roman and American Empires

"The budget should be balanced, the treasury should be refilled, public debt should be reduced, and the assistance to foreign lands should be curtailed lest Rome become bankrupt. People must again learn to work, instead of living on public assistance." - Cicero, 55 BC

  1. Well, then we have about 400 more years until collapse.

    1. I knew that was gonna be your comment. Too bad the rot in Amercia is at a much later stage. The collapse is coming, and sooner than you think.

  3. Now it's my turn to say "I was just going to post that!"

    Seriously. Been reading a few papers on Rome lately; stuff I picked during Classics class in University. Roman history is beyond fascinating and it has become all the more so with the USA-Rome analogy.

    Cicero was a conservative Republican; easily one of the greatest political orators in world history. His concerns and arguments against Caesar and the transistion of Rome from a Republic to Empire is stuff of legend. Getting intimate with this is a must for history enthusiasts.

  4. “The five marks of the Roman decaying culture:

    Concern with displaying affluence instead of building wealth;

    Obsession with sex and perversions of sex;

    Art becomes freakish and sensationalistic instead of creative and original;

    Widening disparity between very rich and very poor;

    Increased demand to live off the state.” ― Edward Gibbon

    Someone please tell me that, today, you cannot easily substitute "American" for "Roman" in Gibbon's observations?
