My review of "Funny People"

I saw "Funny People" yesterday and am still not entirely sure how I felt about it. On one hand, it's definitely better than the typical Adam Sandler film--which have been getting progressively worse over the years (he "peaked," if you can call it that, with Big Daddy). Seth Rogen is great, as always. The first hour is pretty engaging.

Nonethless, the movie has its share of problems, the biggest one being that it's just way, way, way too long. A lot of scenes that could have been drastically cut or scrapped entirely. Adam Sandler's character is a huge jerk with no redeeming qualities whatsoever and it's hard to like him at all. The nonstop penis jokes were annoying, gratuitous and felt forced.

"Funny People" has a lot of chuckles but no belly laughs or thigh-slappers. Overall, I'd say it's just average. Catch it on video if you really care.

5.5/10

  1. The only Adam Sandler films I cared for were atypical for him:
    Punch-Drunk Love and Spanglish.
