Hiroshima was a despicable war crime

Look out, gentle reader -- a "thought crime" is about to be committed. That is, the "official" history we're taught in state-run schools and the state-controlled media is about to be questioned. Could there be anything more heinous or "irresponsible?" Apparently not.

So here it goes: the atomic bombing of Japan was not not not not not not not justified. Not at all. Stop waving your flag. It's soaked in the blood of Japanese children.

Perhaps someone will question the historical arguments given in some of these articles. They're all are moot as far as I'm concerned, even if they're true. Would you accept slavery on the basis of "historical arguments?"

As I wrote in a previous post, Truman was a cold-blooded murderer, a ruthless genocidal butcher, and a savage war criminal. If religion wasn't a hoax, Truman would be rotting in hell as we speak, probably in the same pit as Adolf Hitler.*

Hiroshima is a perfect example of why libertarians oppose the state: it is an evil, barbaric institution of violence and oppression.

* Actually, based on the perverse standards of Christianity, he's probably in heaven.

  1. Cork, thanks for posting this.

I've never understood those who are blind to the fact that the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was mass murder. Of course Truman was a war criminal, even without ever being prosecuted on such a charge.

  2. Well not only do I disagree with the blog I disagree with what SE said. The first thing that should be pointed out is the entire war involved killing on a mass scale, the likes of which had never been seen. The Japanese alone slaughtered roughly 30,000,000 million people before and during the war. We aren't talking just military casualties either. how many??? 30,000,000. 23 million of them were Chinese. I mean have either of you done any research on this at all? The Japanese fully backed and supported Hirohito's scorched earth policy and it quoted himself as saying "Burn all, Kill all, Loot all" In 1942-1945 the Japanese were responsible for the killing of 2.7 Million Chinese Civilians alone! They had a much longer period of attrocities than the Germans did. Are you also aware that at the end of the war only 56 chinese POW's were released?? out of how many taken?? Do you even know the number? The Japanese and the Germans didn't care about the Geneva conventions that had been set up. I mean do you guys know anything at all about WWII? It doesn't really appear that you do. I mean you do realize that the Japanese were training children to fight for when the Americans invaded right? That they starved and Tortured our POWs too? That they considered surrender an act of cowardice? War sucks it really does but we have learned from the past. That is why we don't just go around Bombing people with Nukes whenever they piss us off. The citizens of Japan weren't begging their Government to surrender. They didn't even surrender after Hiroshima. That says something about the mentality. They instead were encouraging suicide attacks. They had the mentality that Honor meant more than death. It took something drastic to shake them from this mentality. The nuclear program had already been in effect during the time of Roosevelt and Truman knew little to nothing about it. He simply gave the order. I would highly suggest doing as much research as humanly possible before you make such an assinine statements.

  3. Yes, absolutely, nuking all those Japanese civilians was mass-murder, and it's simply horrifying that most Americans continuing believing it was somehow justified.

And Adam's argument makes no sense whatsoever -- yes, the Japanese government may have committed all sorts of atrocities, but how in the hell does that justify the US committing atrocities of its own?

Anyway, you guys have a great blog here. It seems to me that far too many libertarians spend far too much time focusing on economic issues. To them, it’s all about dollars and cents, and they don’t seem to care all that much about things like torture and US military aggression. As you guys understand, everything the state does is a crime -- be it raising taxes in America or dropping bombs in Afghanistan.

So keep up the great work, guys!

  4. Adam, your "argument" is just one long tu quoque .

If one BIG BOMB had been invented that when dropped would have destroyed the entire Japanese nation and killed every last Japanese, would that have been justified? By your thinking, to end the war, yes!

What the Japaneses government and military did during the war is irrelevant to the moral question of deliberately targeting civilians (tens of thousands of women and children included) for death and destruction.

If an elite U.S. commando unit had been able to enter Japan and stealthily kill thousands of Japanese babies, would that have been just fine with you? If not why not? And what's the moral difference between that and dropping a bomb from the air?

As for doing research, did you even bother to check out the links Cork posted before going off on your stupid, ignorant rant?

    How about this:

    ADMIRAL WILLIAM D. LEAHY
(Chief of Staff to Presidents Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Truman)

"It is my opinion that the use of this barbarous weapon at Hiroshima and Nagasaki was of no material assistance in our war against Japan. The Japanese were already defeated and ready to surrender because of the effective sea blockade and the successful bombing with conventional weapons.

"The lethal possibilities of atomic warfare in the future are frightening. My own feeling was that in being the first to use it, we had adopted an ethical standard common to the barbarians of the Dark Ages. I was not taught to make war in that fashion, and wars cannot be won by destroying women and children."

    - William Leahy, I Was There, pg. 441.

Our demand for unconditional surrender is what lead to what remained of Japanese resistance at the end of the war.

Learn some real history instead of regurgitating statist propaganda!
