Feds try to take innocent elderly couple's Mom-and-Pop motel

An elderly couple is fighting the Feds to keep their Mom-And-Pop Motel from "Civil Forfeiture." A few people who have rented rooms in their motel over the past 20 years have been arrested on drug charges. The Feds use that as their justification to confiscate the entire motel from the owners, sell it, and split the money between the agencies involved. The most contentious civil forfeiture fight in the nation will be the subject of a week-long trial starting Monday, November 5, 2012, in Boston. Throughout the week, the Institute for Justice, which represents the property owners in the case, will expose the ugly practice of civil forfeiture—where law enforcement agencies can pad their budgets by taking property from innocent owners who have never been convicted or even charged with a crime.-
