The systemic question is this: if ultimate, arbitrary authority in our country is going to be in the hands of a small, unelected group, are politically connected lawyers our choice? In Egypt and Myanmar, the army has the final say; in Iran, it's the mullahs; in Brunei and Saudi Arabia, they have royal families. We have 9 lawyers. Is this a good system? Personally, I'd prefer 9 used-car salesmen or 9 Amway dealers. If we're going to have 9 lawyers hold ultimate authority, do Harvard Law and Yale Law deserve 100% of the seats on the committee? Why? --Kevin Gutzman
