They had many of us fearing a bird flu outbreak, but...
Last year, the number of human cases of avian flu dropped rather than rose for the first time -- from a paltry 115 in 2006 to an even more insignificant 86 in 2007. Frightening headlines warning of a pandemic that could kill 150 million people have all but vanished.
The case of “the impending pandemic of the Avian Flu” might as well have been a fictional mini-series made for television, but as usual, reality is stranger than fiction. It would be hard to make up a story as filled with greed and political corruption as this one.
Back in 2005, headlines warned the U.S. was facing a cataclysmic extermination event, with a calculated two million Americans succumbing to the bird flu; the best case scenario taking only 200,000 lives.
Photos of overflowing hospital wards from the 1918 flu epidemic heightened the fear factor to a fever pitch.
Well. A fool does in the end what the wise man does at the beginning, and this would certainly apply here. Reviewing the scientific facts is often a good place to start, but that did not happen in this case. Somehow they were able to translate the minuscule deaths that had occurred worldwide into somewhere between 200,000 to 2 million deaths from a virus that does NOT readily spread from birds to humans, nor between humans.

Your comments show a complete misunderstanding of the situation. The Bird flu is brewing in nature as we speak. It has mutated before and it will mutate again.
ReplyDeleteSome people believe Bird Flu will never mutate, others that it will mutate tomorrow. Both are wrong. But it is clear from research aand events that it is mutating and one day, sooner rather than later, millions of people will die from it.
Will you be ready?

IT reminds me of the SARS 'outbreak' a few years back.
ReplyDeleteA couple of people in Toronto got infected, and they had to get the Rolling Stones in to play a concert to promote the city after the scare.
Well, compare # of deaths to SARS to # of deaths to smoking, heart attack, cancer ... and it wasn't even close.
If possible could you please use your brain and talents to help EDUCATE people on the possible mutation. Unfortunatley for people such as yourself instant gratification is the only answer. I have spent the last four years following the developments of the H5N1 virus. In case you haven't noticed people are dying daily as we speak. I hope to god that this disease does not mutate. It has the potential to change the dynamics of the world as we know it. Where does this information come from? I was playing golf with one of the Under Secretary's of Home Land Defense late last summer, and. In his own words, "If the H5N1 mutates to Human to Human transmission the ramifications would be as second only to a nuclear war". The last thing he mentioned was not a question of If, it is just a question of WHEN. Open your eyes, your heart, and your thought process's to use your time to help people learn how to prepare for a possible event. It is like he said. A household that is prepared for the flu, would also be prepared for another attack that IS going to occur. It is a different world, and the future does not look as bright as it once did;
