Glenn Greenwald: Why privacy matters

  1. The "If you're not doing anything wrong you've got nothing to hide" is ludicrous. Stockbrokers have to hide the big trades their clients make, staff at battered women's shelters have to hide the location of their workplace, research and development people have to hide their trade secrets, witnesses to crimes by violent people have to hide where they live, lots of people, starting authors have to hide their crappy first drafts, there are many more examples of things "hidden" that are not "bad", even without considering "dissidents" or people who somehow challenge the power structure.
